Local History

The site was the head of navigation on the Holston River, home in the late 1700s to King's Boat Yard, from which the name Kingsport derives; it was a launching point for settlers heading west.

Two adjacent towns, Christianville and Rossville, were laid out in the early 1800s and merged; the community was chartered as King's Port / Kingsport in 1822.

During the Civil War, the Battle of Kingsport (December 13, 1864) saw about 300 Confederates briefly resist a far larger Union force.

The modern 'Model City' was created as an offshoot of the Carolina, Clinchfield & Ohio Railway; land was bought in 1916 and Massachusetts planner John Nolen designed the city.
