Local History

Settlement began in the mid-19th century as Allendale, a small community on the northwest shore of Lake Tohopekaliga, drawing post-Civil War veterans and land seekers.

The early town was founded before the Civil War by the Bass, Johnson, and Overstreet families.

It was renamed Kissimmee City and incorporated by local vote on December 21, 1882, becoming a municipality in 1883.

Osceola County was created in May 1887 from parts of Orange and Brevard counties and named for the Seminole leader Osceola, with Kissimmee designated the county seat.

The Silver Spurs Rodeo, running since 1944, is Florida's official state rodeo and the largest rodeo east of the Mississippi; Osceola County schools give students a day off for 'Rodeo Day' during the February event.
