Local History

Albert Alonzo Durham founded the town of Oswego in 1847, naming it after Oswego, New York, and built a sawmill on Sucker Creek (now Oswego Creek).

The Oregon Iron Company, incorporated in 1865, built the first blast furnace on the West Coast (1867) and aimed to make Oswego the 'Pittsburgh of the West,' producing about 12,305 tons of pig iron by 1890.

The community incorporated as Oswego in 1910 and was renamed Lake Oswego in 1960 after annexing neighboring Lake Grove.

The lake was called 'Waluga' (a Clackamas word for wild swan) and later Sucker Lake before the U.S. Board on Geographic Names settled on Oswego Lake in 1913.

Culture and Community

The Lake Oswego Festival of the Arts, running since 1961, is a three-day summer event that draws up to about 30,000 visitors and includes the free Art in the Park exhibition.

The Lakewood Center for the Arts is a longtime community theater and visual-arts hub that helps produce the festival.
