Local History

The area was homeland of the Grand River Odawa, whose villages were led by figures including Wabiwindego, Keewaycooshcum, and Cobmoosa.

French-Canadian trader Daniel Marsac established a trading post on the south bank of the Grand River in 1831, beside the existing Odawa village.

The community took the name Lowell from the township (post office 1851; the township name traces to Lowell, Massachusetts) and incorporated as a village in 1861.

The Odawa relocated to a Manistee-area reservation in 1858.

The Lowell Showboat tradition dates to 1932, when town leaders built a Flat River paddle-wheeler stage to draw people downtown during the Great Depression; the boat has been rebuilt six times.
