Local History

The New Hudson area began in 1830 when Russell Alvord and Daniel Richards obtained 40 acres on a deed signed by President Andrew Jackson.

They opened the "Old Tavern" inn in 1831 as a stagecoach stop on the New Hudson Station line; Alvord platted the community in 1837.

A stage-line post office was established in 1834 and a U.S. government post office in June 1852.

The township is named after Lucius Lyon (1800-1851), a surveyor who became Michigan Territory's congressional delegate and one of the state's first two U.S. senators.
