Local Landmarks and Attractions

Converse Memorial Library, designed by architect Henry Hobson Richardson and built in 1885, funded by first mayor Elisha S. Converse.

Local History

Settled by Puritans in 1640 on land north of the Mystic River, on ground purchased in 1629 from the Pawtucket Confederation and granted in 1639 by the Squaw Sachem of Mistick; the area was first called the 'Mistick Side' as part of Charlestown.

Incorporated as a separate town in 1649 under the name 'Mauldon'; early settler and landholder Joseph Hills chose the name after Maldon, England.

Residents boycotted tea in 1770 to protest the Revenue Act, and Malden claims to be the first town to petition the colonial government to secede from the British Empire.

Originally much larger, Malden shed present-day Melrose (in 1850) and Everett (in 1870) before becoming a city in 1882.

One of the most diverse cities in Massachusetts: roughly 41 percent of residents were foreign-born as of the 2020 Census, with large communities of Asian, Brazilian, Haitian, Indian, Moroccan, and Pakistani heritage.

A 2013 National Center for Education Statistics study found Malden High School to be the most diverse public high school in Massachusetts.

The Malden High vs. Medford High Thanksgiving Day football game, first played in 1889, is one of the oldest continuous high school football rivalries in the United States.
