Local History

Charles T. Harvey, who had helped complete the Soo Canal, established a community at the mouth of the Manistique River around 1860 and built a dam to power a lumber mill.

The settlement was originally called Eastport; the name was later changed to match the Manistique River, and a clerical spelling change (an 'a' registered in place of an 'o' in 'Monistique') produced the current spelling.

Manistique incorporated as a village in 1883 and as a city in 1901, and it replaced Onota as the Schoolcraft County seat.

At the turn of the 20th century it was a boomtown, shipping timber and pig iron daily from its harbor; the lumber mill once employed roughly a third of the town's population.

Culture and Community

Folkfest is the signature summer event, held on the main street the second Saturday of July with 75-plus vendors and crafters, food vendors, and live music all day.

Local athletic teams carry the 'Emeralds' name, tied to the city's Emerald City nickname.
