Local History

First settled in 1642 as part of Haverhill and incorporated as a town on December 8, 1725, named for Sir Paul Methuen, a member of the King's Privy Council.

Three prominent families, the Nevins, the Tenneys, and the Searles, funded much of the town's civic architecture in the 1800s.

The Nevins Memorial Library was founded in 1868 by David Nevins Sr. and completed in 1883, two years after his death.

The Methuen Festival of Trees, begun in 1994 as a fundraiser to restore the Tenney Gate House, has grown into the largest festival of its kind in New England, displaying up to 240 trees and wreaths and drawing as many as 30,000 guests.
