About Miami Beach, Florida
Miami Beach is a barrier-island city in Miami-Dade County, separated from mainland Miami by Biscayne Bay and connected by causeways, world-famous for its beaches, nightlife, and pastel Art Deco architecture. Much of the island is man-made land created by dredging in the 1920s, transformed by developer Carl Fisher into a glamorous resort destination. Its South Beach neighborhood holds the largest concentration of Art Deco buildings in the nation and hosts marquee events like Art Basel Miami Beach.
Local Landmarks and Attractions
- The Art Deco Historic District, roughly between 5th and 23rd Streets along Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue, and Washington Avenue, holds the nation's largest concentration of Art Deco architecture with over 800 historic buildings.
- The Versace Mansion (Casa Casuarina) at 1116 Ocean Drive, built in 1930, where fashion designer Gianni Versace lived from 1992 until his murder there in 1997; it now operates as a boutique hotel.
- The Fontainebleau, Eden Roc, and the National Hotel, landmark mid-century resort hotels along Collins Avenue.
- Lincoln Road, a pedestrian shopping promenade; Española Way, a Mediterranean-style lane; and the Holocaust Memorial Miami Beach.
Local History
- Miami Beach officially became a city on March 26, 1915, on land where agriculturalist John Collins had dredged the Collins Canal and, with Carl Fisher, developed the beachfront starting in 1913.
- Carl Fisher, who had made his fortune from Prest-O-Lite and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, funded the first bridge from Miami and drove the island's development into a luxury resort.
- In the 1920s much of Miami Beach was created as landfill by dredging Biscayne Bay, forming Star, Palm, and Hibiscus Islands, the Sunset Islands, much of Normandy Isle, and the Venetian Islands.
Culture and Community
- Art Basel Miami Beach, held each December at the Convention Center, features roughly 250 galleries and draws tens of thousands of collectors, curators, and celebrities as the centerpiece of Miami Art Week.
- Joe's Stone Crab, opened as a lunch counter by Joe Weiss in 1913 (before the city existed), turned locally caught stone crabs into a signature South Florida dish.
- Strong Cuban and Latin American cultural influence shapes the city's food, music, and street life.
