Local History

By the late 1820s Midland was a fur-trading post tied to the American Fur Company, with the Campau family of Detroit operating a trading post there.

It grew in the 1830s as a lumbering settlement and was named for the county, located near the middle of Michigan's Lower Peninsula.

Rich underground brine made the area the world's largest producer of bromine by 1888, and Herbert H. Dow founded the Dow Chemical Company in Midland in 1897 on his improved bromine-extraction method.

After a 1907 fire destroyed the local high school, Dow Chemical donated $11,000 to help rebuild it, launching the school's enduring 'Chemics' identity.
