Recorded settlement began around 1831 when miners founded the town of St. Joseph Iron Works to work newly discovered bog-iron deposits along the St. Joseph River.

The city was established in 1833 through the consolidation of St. Joseph Iron Works, Indiana City, and adjacent towns; the name is generally traced to the Potawatomi language.

The 'Princess City' nickname comes from a fully fictional legend, published by Michigan author Flavius J. Littlejohn in 1875, that 'Mishawaka' was the daughter of a Shawnee chief named Elkhart; the invented tale stuck anyway.

A fire in 1872 destroyed roughly three-quarters of the business district, after which citizens rebuilt and courted new industry.
