Local History

The chapel of La Lomita ("the little hill") was built by Oblate of Mary Immaculate missionaries as a way station for priests riding between Brownsville and Roma; the present chapel dates to 1899.

The town was platted around 1908 by the Mission Land and Town-Site Company (developers John J. Conway and James W. Hoit) and incorporated in 1910; resident Ann Voltz suggested naming it "Mission" after La Lomita.

Horticulturist John H. Shary, later called the father of the Texas citrus industry, built the local citrus economy in the 1910s-1920s.

The Ruby Red grapefruit was patented in 1934, the first grapefruit ever awarded a U.S. plant patent, and by the 1940s the Valley had more than 100,000 acres of citrus.

Culture and Community

The Texas Citrus Fiesta, held in late January, features a parade on Conway Avenue and a Product Costume Show whose costumes are made from citrus, plants, and other natural materials.
