Local History

The first white settler was Job Sargent, a War of 1812 veteran granted land in the Northwest Territory; his son Nathan built the first cabin on the site around 1850.

The village was platted in 1867 by Rev. William Montague Ferry and Anders and Even Knudsen; founder Noah Ferry named it for his father, Rev. William Montague Ferry, who also founded Grand Haven and Ferrysburg.

Noah Ferry died fighting for the Union at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863; the Ferry Church was built in his memory in 1874.

The first sawmill (the Ferry Mill) was built in 1850; at the lumber-era peak roughly 16 mills operated on White Lake, some cutting up to 50,000 board feet in a single 12-hour day.

The Book Nook & Java Shop, a downtown bookstore-coffeehouse, is known for a weekly lineup of live music and events.

Cyclists ride the Hart-Montague Trail past cherry, peach, and plum orchards each summer and fall.
