The Moore post office was established May 27, 1889, during the Land Run of 1889, named for Al Moore, an Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway employee who nailed a board painted 'Moore' to his boxcar so he could get mail.

A large 1961 annexation of about 21.6 square miles transformed the small town into a full city by 1962.

On May 3, 1999, an F5 tornado, then the costliest in history, struck the area with a mobile-radar wind measurement near 301 mph, among the highest ever recorded.
