Local History

Settlement began in 1833 by pioneers from New York; the community was later named for Morenci, Arizona, then a booming copper-mining district.

The Chicago and Canada Southern Railway opened a line through Morenci to Fayette, Ohio, in 1872; that rail line was abandoned in 1991.

Morenci native Edward D. Stair, born March 29, 1859, became a newspaperman and eventually editor/owner of the Detroit Free Press, and also produced theater, including a production of "The Wizard of Oz."

Stair poured wealth back into his hometown, funding the Stair Auditorium, a public library, and a gymnasium.

Culture and Community

The Morenci Town & Country Festival, the city's signature event, runs Thursday through Saturday of the third week of June each year.

Additional community events include Fall Fest and Summer Saturdays downtown.
