Local History

The area was inhabited for thousands of years by the Ojibwe and Noquet peoples, who harvested blueberries and crops from grasslands near Grand Island.

Settlement dates to about 1855, when the Munising Iron Company platted an early village; when the company failed the fledgling town struggled to survive.

The first post office opened December 22, 1868.

The post office was renamed Gogarnville on October 23, 1889, under postmaster Julius Gogarn, a German-born Civil War veteran and the first township supervisor, before the Munising name prevailed.
