Local History

Iron ore was discovered nearby on September 19, 1844, when surveyor William Austin Burt's compass failed due to magnetic ore near Teal Lake; Ojibwe chief Marji-Gesick then showed a find of ore to Jackson Mining Company organizer Philo Everett.

The Jackson Mine, the first iron mine in the Lake Superior region, opened as the first open-pit mine in 1845; the region's first iron forge was built on the Carp River nearby.

The name comes from the Ojibwe/Anishinaabe word 'nigani/Negaunee,' meaning 'foremost, leading,' or loosely 'pioneer.'

Received a post office in 1858, incorporated as a village in 1865, and became a city in 1873.

Pioneer Days, held each July the week after the Fourth, is run by the Negaunee Irontown Association (founded 1979) and features alumni softball games, a model car show, ice cream socials, a parade, and fireworks over Teal Lake.
