Local History

Founded March 21, 1845, when Nicolaus Zink led a German immigrant wagon train, under the Adelsverein colonization society, to a site on Comal Creek chosen by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels.

Named for Braunfels, Germany, the prince's home on the Lahn River; 'Braunfels' translates roughly as 'brown rock.'

Settlers harnessed the reliable water power of the Comal Springs to build mills, stores and craft shops, quickly making the town a commercial hub.

Prince Solms laid the cornerstone of the Sophienburg fort-headquarters in 1845, named for his fiancee Princess Sophie, who refused to leave Germany; he married her that December and never returned to Texas.

Wurstfest, a 10-day 'salute to sausage' with beer, Alpine music and dancing, has run every November since 1961 (the first drew about 2,000 people to the National Guard Armory).
