The area was home to Shoshonean (Tongva) Native peoples and was part of Rancho Los Coyotes, an 1834 subdivision of the 1784 Spanish land grant Rancho Los Nietos.

In 1869 Atwood Sproul bought 463 acres at about $11 per acre on behalf of his brother Gilbert in an area called "Corazon de los Valles."

After the railroad crossed the "north walk" area in 1873, the settlement was first recorded as Corvallis, then officially renamed Norwalk in 1874.

D.D. Johnston started the first school system in 1880 and helped create the area's first cheese factory in 1882.

The population was 102,773 at the 2020 census, with about 71.6% identifying as Hispanic or Latino, giving the city a strongly Latino cultural character.
