Local History

Ute people long inhabited Utah Valley before Mormon pioneers settled the area, then called the 'Provo Bench,' in the 1870s.

The community was known variously as 'Sharon' and 'Provo Bench' before being named after Walter C. Orem, president of the Salt Lake and Utah Railroad, to attract rail service; it incorporated on May 5, 1919.

Early Orem was defined by fruit orchards, and the nearby Geneva Steel works drove industrialization in the 1940s during and after World War II.

The city grew from just 435 residents in 1890 to 98,129 in the 2020 census, making it Utah's fifth-largest city.
