After a devastating 1903 Kansas River flood, railroad developer William B. Strang Jr. proposed a suburban community on higher ground in rural Johnson County.

In 1905 Strang began platting subdivisions along an old military road (now the city's main thoroughfare), naming one "Overland Park" - a blend of his "park-like" vision and the Overland Trail nickname for the Santa Fe Trail.

Overland Park was officially incorporated as a city of the first class on May 20, 1960, with a population of 28,085; it has grown to roughly 197,000 residents by 2020.
