Before 1948 the area was two separate farm villages, Hynes and Clearwater.

From roughly 1930 to 1960 the towns anchored Southern California's dairy belt, packing in about 25,000 cows, more per square mile than anywhere west of Chicago.

The two communities merged and adopted the name Paramount in 1948, taken from Paramount Boulevard, the main north-south street.

Paramount incorporated as a city on January 30, 1957, after a 'Save Paramount for Paramount' campaign fought off annexation by Long Beach, Bellflower, and South Gate.

Culture and Community

Paramount has become a hub of Sinaloan-Mexican culture and seafood cooking, with restaurants such as El Sinaloense (opened 2011).
