Founded in 1893 by John H. Burnett of Galveston, who named the site 'Pasadena' after Pasadena, California, because of its lush vegetation; the La Porte, Houston and Northern Railroad reached the townsite in 1894.

After the 1900 Galveston hurricane, Clara Barton of the American Red Cross purchased roughly 1.5 million strawberry plants for Gulf Coast farmers, helping launch Pasadena's strawberry industry.

By the 1930s Pasadena billed itself as the Strawberry Capital, at its peak shipping as many as 28 railcar loads of strawberries a day to markets as far as Chicago and Kansas City.

Oil companies including Sinclair (later ARCO), Texaco, and Crown built refineries in the area by 1920, and World War II shifted the economy decisively from farming to ship-channel industry.

Culture and Community

Gilley's, the honky-tonk co-founded by country star Mickey Gilley and Sherwood Cryer, operated on Spencer Highway from 1970 to 1990; with roughly 6,000 capacity it was listed in Guinness as the world's largest honky-tonk and starred as the main set of 'Urban Cowboy' (1980).

The Pasadena Strawberry Festival, run by the San Jacinto Day Foundation, is held each spring around San Jacinto Day to commemorate the 1836 Battle of San Jacinto and funds scholarships and civic projects.
