Local History

The community began near a railroad siding on the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway in 1882.

A post office established in 1893 named the settlement 'Mark Belt,' after landowner Mark Belt, who sorted mail from his home.

On September 24, 1894, Witold von Zychlinski filed a plat naming the townsite 'Pear-Land' after the area's pear trees; the name was standardized to Pearland that November.

The Southern Homestead Company advertised to Midwestern buyers to come grow pears, though a devastating 1900 hurricane wiped out much of the orchard industry.
