Local History

Undeveloped Oakland County was labeled the Great Swamp when surveyed in 1817, but a strip of high, ancient beach ridge, easily traveled on foot and horse, became Ridge Road and the spine of the future town.

Founded in 1913 when Burt Taylor subdivided the Mayday farm; by 1912-1913 about ten families had formed the first community.

The Walter Gehrke Company developed much of the subdivision, with most homes built between 1910 and 1930.

Incorporated as a village within Royal Oak Township in 1921, then as an autonomous city in 1927.
