Local History

Organized as a township on March 19, 1845, with nineteen people attending the first township meeting at the home of Dr. Timothy Eastman, who moderated.

Its oldest settler was Justus Stiles, a prominent farmer who arrived from Vermont in 1836; Dr. George W. Scranton had settled the Eastmanville area in 1835, when it was first called Scranton.

Dr. Timothy Eastman of Maine platted the village of Eastmanville with his sons Galen and Mason in 1855, and served as township supervisor, county judge, and Polkton's first postmaster (1846).

Eastmanville nearly became the Ottawa County seat in 1857, gaining the county board's assent but failing to win popular support.
