Local History

The city is named for the Florida pompano fish (Trachinotus carolinus); by local lore a surveyor, Frank Sheen, wrote down the name of the fish he had eaten for dinner.

The first documented permanent residents, the George Butler and Frank Sheen families, arrived in 1896 as railway employees, and the first train reached the settlement on February 22, 1896.

Pompano was founded in 1908 (later renamed Pompano Beach after merging with a beachside community).

Farming, especially winter vegetables like green beans, and later fishing shaped the early economy of the 'Gold Coast' town.

The Pompano Beach Seafood Festival is the city's signature annual event.
