Local History

The area was home to Timucua and later Seminole peoples, and lay within Dr. Andrew Turnbull's New Smyrna Colony established in 1768.

Patrick Dean was granted 995 acres in 1804, land that became the Dunlawton Plantation; its sugar mill was destroyed twice by Seminole forces during the Second Seminole War of 1836.

After the Civil War, abolitionist and Army surgeon Dr. John Milton Hawks brought about 500 freed African Americans to public lands along the Halifax River in 1866 to work a sawmill.

The settlement, first called Orange Port, was renamed Port Orange in April 1867 because another U.S. town already held the earlier name; it was incorporated on April 26, 1867.
