Local History

Modern Pueblo was assembled from four separate towns, Pueblo (1870), South Pueblo (1873), Central Pueblo (1882), and Bessemer (1886), which consolidated between 1886 and 1894.

The Colorado Fuel & Iron (CF&I) steel mill opened in 1882 and made Pueblo an industrial powerhouse; by 1909 it was the only steel town west of the Mississippi River.

For nearly a century CF&I was the largest private employer in the state of Colorado.

The steel-market crash of 1982 gutted the mill and the local economy; after bankruptcies the works were acquired by Oregon Steel Mills and later became Rocky Mountain Steel / EVRAZ.
