The area's first residents were the Acjachemen (Juaneno), Shoshonean Native Americans.

Recorded history began in 1769 when Gaspar de Portola's Spanish expedition passed through; a soldier lost his musket (trabuco), which gave the name to Trabuco Creek, canyon, and later local streets and schools.

After Mexican independence, the land was split into the ranchos Trabuco, Mission Viejo, and Santa Margarita; Juan Forster bought the area in 1843 and renamed it 'La Victoria.'

In 1882 Jerome O'Neill and James Flood bought the ranchos and ran them as a huge cattle ranch; in 1940 the ranch was divided, with the O'Neill family keeping the upper (Orange County) portion.
