Local History

The Central Pacific Railroad named the area Rocklin in 1864 after its granite quarry, using the site as a refueling and water stop as track pushed southwest from Newcastle toward Secret Ravine.

Granite from Rocklin's quarries became the base course of the California State Capitol; earlier Rocklin/Penryn-area granite was used at Fort Mason in San Francisco in 1855.

By 1910 about 22 quarries operated in town, and in 1912 nearly 2,000 rail carloads of granite left Rocklin for the state capitol and San Francisco buildings.

The town incorporated in 1893 and grew steadily after the 1869 completion of the transcontinental railroad.

Culture and Community

Quarry Park's outdoor amphitheater hosts summer concerts and community events inside a former granite pit.

The city is organized around distinct districts including the Quarry, Granite, College and University districts.
