Local History

In 1830, coastal Georgia planter Roswell King traveled through the area and saw potential for a cotton mill along Vickery Creek; he returned to build the Roswell Manufacturing Company, which became the largest cotton mill in north Georgia.

King brought dozens of enslaved Africans, including skilled carpenters, whose Geechee/Gullah coastal culture came with them to north Georgia.

The city was chartered on February 16, 1854.

During the Civil War (July 1864), Union forces under General Kenner Garrard, on Sherman's orders, burned the mills and had roughly 400 mill workers, mostly women, charged with treason and shipped north by rail.
