Local History

American settlers moved into the area in the 1840s, and Dallas County was organized in 1846.

The first post office opened April 5, 1880, named 'Morris' for postmaster Austin Morris, then was renamed Rowlett for Rowlett Creek, a tributary of the East Fork of the Trinity River.

The creek and city name honor Daniel Rowlett, who moved from Kentucky to Bonham, Texas, in 1835, though he never lived in the town that bears the name.

By 1892 the town had about 200 residents, a general store, a mill, and a cotton gin operated by D.W. Housley.
