Local History

First reached by Europeans on March 20, 1772, when Spanish captain Pedro Fages and Father Juan Crespi passed through; the name honors Leander of Seville, a sixth-century Spanish bishop.

Jose Joaquin Estudillo received the roughly 9,000-acre Rancho San Leandro Mexican land grant in 1842, and the town was incorporated on March 21, 1872.

Served as the Alameda County seat from 1856 until the 1868 Hayward earthquake destroyed the county courthouse; the seat was then moved toward Oakland.

After World War II, restrictive covenants barred sales to Black and minority buyers, and by 1960 the city was 99.3% white; comedian Brian Copeland chronicled growing up there in his memoir 'Not a Genuine Black Man.'

Culture and Community

The San Leandro Cherry Festival, first held in 1909 to celebrate a bumper cherry crop, still fills historic downtown near Casa Peralta each year with a parade and street fair.

Portuguese immigrants arrived from the 1880s and made up nearly two-thirds of the population by 1910, leaving a lasting Azorean cultural imprint.

Sister cities reflect that heritage and later immigration: Ponta Delgada in the Portuguese Azores (since 1970), Naga in the Philippines (1989), and Ribeirao Preto in Brazil (1962).
