Local History

Ohlone (Coastanoan) peoples lived on this stretch of the Peninsula for thousands of years before European contact.

In 1776 a Spanish expedition camped by a creek that Father Pedro Font named San Mateo (St. Matthew); mission fathers built an outpost there in 1793, the first non-native structure in the area.

After the Mexican-American War, William Davis Merry Howard bought part of the Rancho de las Pulgas grant and built along San Mateo Creek in the late 1840s, seeding a settlement.

The city incorporated on September 4, 1894, with Captain A.H. Payson as its first mayor.

Culture and Community

Central Park's Japanese Tea Garden, opened in 1966, was designed by Nagao Sakurai, formerly of Tokyo's Imperial Palace, reflecting the sister-city tie with Toyonaka, Japan.
