Local History

The region was the homeland of the Kumeyaay people, who had a village called Sinyeweche on the banks of the San Diego River.

In 1877 pioneer rancher and businessman George A. Cowles bought 4,000 acres for vineyards, and the area became known as Cowlestown, linked by the Cuyamaca Railroad.

After Cowles died in 1887, his widow Jennie married Milton Santee and lobbied to rename Cowlestown; residents reluctantly approved changing the name to Santee in 1893.

Residents voted for cityhood in 1980, formally establishing the City of Santee and electing its first five-member City Council; the 2020 population was 60,037.
