Founded in the summer of 1904 when the Southern Pacific Railroad moved its maintenance shops and headquarters from Wadsworth to the Truckee Meadows; the settlement was variously called East Reno, Glendale, and Harriman before being named 'Sparks' for the sitting Nevada Governor John Sparks.

Incorporated on March 15, 1905.

To build a workforce town, the railroad set aside five city blocks for employees' homes, sold lots for $1.00 each, and even cut existing houses in Wadsworth into sections and shipped them free by rail to Sparks.

In 1956-57 the Southern Pacific completed its conversion from steam to diesel locomotives; the Sparks maintenance facilities became obsolete and the city lost the core of its economy almost overnight, pushing it toward Reno's economy, gaming, and distribution.

Culture and Community

The Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off, held on Victorian Square over Labor Day weekend, draws more than two dozen professional BBQ teams who serve over 240,000 pounds of ribs to hundreds of thousands of visitors, with free admission and nightly live music.

Hot August Nights (classic-car celebration) and Sparks Hometowne Christmas are signature Victorian Square events.
