Local History

The area sits over parts of two Mexican-era land grants, Rancho Los Alamitos and Rancho Los Coyotes, descendants of the 1784 Rancho Los Nietos granted to Manuel Nieto.

The railroad stop here was originally recorded as "Benedict"; the name was changed to Stanton in 1911 after Philip A. Stanton, a Republican state assemblyman (1903-1909) who helped organize the district.

Stanton first incorporated in 1911 and was briefly the largest city in Orange County by area; a chief motivation was blocking Anaheim's plan to build a sewage "farm" to its west.

The first City of Stanton dis-incorporated in the 1920s (residents voted it out to avoid road-building costs) before re-incorporating in its current form on June 4, 1956.
