Local History

The area began as the Oakland Plantation on land from Stephen F. Austin's colony; Samuel May Williams bought it in 1838 and installed a commercial sugar-grinding mill by 1843.

The Kempner family of Galveston, led by Isaac H. Kempner, and partner W.T. Eldridge acquired the Ellis Plantation (1906) and Cunningham Plantation (1908) and formed the Imperial Sugar Company.

Imperial Sugar ran Sugar Land as a company town from the 1910s until 1959, providing housing, schools, and a hospital.

Incorporated as a general-law city in 1959, with T.E. Harman as first mayor.
