Local History

Originally called Shoal Point, the area was settled in the 1830s by veterans of the Texas Revolution who were awarded land for their service.

Its port potential was recognized in 1891 by three brothers from Duluth, Minnesota (Benjamin, Henry, and Jacob Myers); the Texas City Improvement Company formed in 1893 and the city incorporated in 1911.

The April 16, 1947 disaster: the French cargo ship Grandcamp, loaded with ammonium nitrate fertilizer, exploded at the dock, setting off a chain reaction that ignited the ships High Flyer and Wilson B. Keene. Roughly 581 people were killed and over 5,000 injured, making it the deadliest industrial accident in U.S. history and a foundation of modern American disaster planning.

On March 23, 2005, an explosion at the BP (formerly Amoco) refinery killed 15 workers and injured 180.
