Local History

Founded in 1816 by Abram Caleb Truax, a territorial militiaman who acquired a large riverfront tract from the U.S. government and built a sawmill, church and store in what is now downtown.

The village was originally laid out as "Truaxton" in 1834; the post office and community were renamed "Trenton" in 1847 after the local Trenton limestone formation quarried nearby.

Incorporated as a village in 1855, annexed the neighboring community of Sibley in 1929, and incorporated as a city in 1957.

McLouth Steel opened its Trenton plant on 200 acres of riverfront in 1949; it grew into the ninth-largest U.S. steelmaker before filing bankruptcy in 1995 and ceasing operations in 1996, laying off about 1,350 workers.

Culture and Community

Roar on the River, an annual APBA hydroplane boat-racing weekend held at Elizabeth Park, is billed as Downriver's premier summer event with high-speed racing, live music and food.

Trenton Summer Festival (held the last weekend of June) and "Taste of Trenton" are staple community events, along with a Country Christmas celebration.
