Local History

The land was home to the Patwin people and the Ululato tribelet, whose village sat along Ulatis Creek in what is now downtown Vacaville.

Juan Manuel Cabeza Vaca and Juan Felipe Peña received a roughly 44,000-acre Mexican land grant (Rancho Los Putos) in 1842; the Peña Adobe, built that year, is the oldest standing building in the area.

Landowner William McDaniel bought about nine square miles on December 13, 1851, and the town was laid out and named for Juan Manuel Vaca.

Vacaville incorporated as a city on August 9, 1892.
