Local History

The land that became Valley Stream was purchased in 1640 by the Dutch West India Company from the Rockaway Native Americans.

The community was named by Robert Pagan, a Scottish immigrant who ran the first post office out of his farmhouse and chose 'Valley Stream' for the area's topography and the Valley Stream Brook running through it; the U.S. Post Office accepted the name in 1843.

Developer William R. Gibson, who had built thousands of homes in Queens, began developing about 500 acres in Valley Stream in 1922; the Gibson LIRR station, named for him, opened May 29, 1929.

The Village of Valley Stream was incorporated on February 14, 1925.

Culture and Community

Valley Stream has produced a striking number of entertainers, including actor/director Steve Buscemi (Valley Stream Central High class of 1975), musician Cyndi Lauper (lived on the west side before fame), comedian Fred Armisen, actor/director Edward Burns, and tennis champion Naomi Osaka.

Buscemi's 1996 film 'Trees Lounge' is set in and was largely shot in his childhood village of Valley Stream.

Firemen's Memorial Field is a long-standing community gathering place, host to the village's annual summer fireworks spectacular.
