Founded March 1, 1849 by four men led by Townsend North and James M. Edmunds, who scouted the Cass River for a site to build a dam and start a town.

Named after Matthew Vassar, uncle of co-founder James M. Edmunds; Matthew Vassar later founded Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York.

Served as the original county seat of Tuscola County until 1860, when the seat was moved to Caro.
