First settlement was a shanty built in 1830 by a New York squatter named Linux Jacox; Butler Holcomb built the second house and a sawmill in 1832.

Named for brothers Jeremiah and Nelson Clark, who platted the village tract in 1842 and built a sawmill, gristmill, fish hatchery, and general store.

The Independence post office was moved to the community on December 12, 1840.

By 1877 the area had grown to roughly 1,400 residents with hotels, wagon and harness makers, liveries, and three physicians.
