Local History

Warwick was founded in 1642 by Samuel Gorton, a religious and political dissenter, and named for Robert Rich, 2nd Earl of Warwick, who backed Gorton's bid for a royal charter against the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

The settlement was largely destroyed during King Philip's War (1675-1676).

On the night of June 9-10, 1772, local patriots rowed out and burned the grounded British revenue schooner HMS Gaspee off Namquid (now Gaspee) Point, wounding its commander Lt. William Dudingston, an act of armed resistance that predated the Boston Tea Party.

Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene, later called the 'Savior of the South,' was born and raised in Warwick's Potowomut section and helped found the Kentish Guards in 1774.
