Local History

First American settlers arrived in the 1850s, drawn by the fertile muck land along Lake Apopka; the Roper, Reams, Dunaway, Speer and Starke families were among the earliest, farming citrus and vegetables in lakeside settlements.

The Orange Belt Railroad and the growth of citrus, turpentine and lumber drove the town's rise, with businesses springing up along Plant Street; the community was established in 1903 and incorporated as a city in 1908, with A.B. Newton as first mayor.

Two fires destroyed the original wooden downtown buildings and packinghouses, after which the Plant and Main Street commercial district was rebuilt in brick along the two rail lines that ran through town.

The Great Freeze of 1894-1895 devastated the citrus crop; the industry recovered but declined again after back-to-back freezes in the 1980s.

Culture and Community

The award-winning Winter Garden Farmers Market runs every Saturday year-round, 8 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Downtown Pavilion (104 S. Lakeview Avenue).

Plant Street Market, a roughly 12,000-square-foot indoor food hall at 426 West Plant Street, opened in 2014 with about 20 vendors around its cornerstone tenant, Crooked Can Brewing.
