On May 18, 1927, school board treasurer and farmer Andrew Kehoe detonated explosives he had secretly planted under the Bath Consolidated School, then set off a second bomb in his truck; the attacks killed 38 schoolchildren and 6 adults (plus Kehoe and his wife, whom he murdered beforehand), remaining the deadliest school massacre in U.S. history.

U.S. Senator James Couzens personally donated $75,000 to build a replacement school, which was named the James Couzens Agricultural School in his honor.

Park Lake was an early recreation destination and site of the Park Lake Dance Pavilion, where big-band leader Tommy Dorsey performed before the pavilion burned in the 1930s; the lake was also a point on the historic Park Lake Native American trailway.
