Local History

Land was purchased from the U.S. government in 1832 by speculators (George/Charles Barnes), then sold in 1835 to Edmond B. Bostwick, who named the settlement for his wife, Charlotte – she reportedly wanted "Charlotteville."

Designated Eaton County seat in 1837, though early county functions were handled from nearby Bellevue until about 1840 because Charlotte lacked buildings.

Jonathan Searles became the first postmaster on March 17, 1838; Charlotte incorporated as a village in 1863 and as a city in 1871.

The locally built Dolson automobile was manufactured in Charlotte from 1904 to 1907.

Culture and Community

Charlotte Frontier Days, first held in September 1971 with a parade, rodeo, arts-and-crafts show and queen's contest, runs every year on the weekend after Labor Day; proceeds support local schools and community.

The Eaton Theatre, an Art Deco movie house, opened as a single screen in 1931 and was later twinned.
