Local History

Iron ore was discovered in 1880 when hunter and trapper Richard Langford found ore under an overturned birch tree; mining operations began in 1883.

The Milwaukee Lake Shore and Western Railroad platted the town in 1884; Bessemer incorporated as a village in 1887 and as a city in 1889.

The city is named for Sir Henry Bessemer (1813-1898), the English inventor of the Bessemer steel-making process, who never lived there.

In an 1887 county-seat election against Ironwood, accounts say Ironwood voters headed to vote were plied with drink and their train did not stop at the voting site, helping Bessemer win the county seat.
